In all Hobbs Band classes, students are expected to gain good citizenship skills by working appropriately in a large group setting. Students will:
- Create the classroom atmosphere, with your teacher. Atmosphere is everything!
- Always have instrument, pencil and music book/music folder at your seat and music stand.
- Touch only YOUR instrument.
- Treat everyone else’s instrument with respect.
- Treat the school-owned band instruments, and band room items with respect.
- Leave your seating area clean, including stand and floor, when packing up. Pick up after yourself, and yes, sometimes others…it’s OUR Band Room.
- Storage room/areas are for your backpack and phone during class time. Backpack with your phone inside of it are on or under the tables in the storage room.
- Because ants like to invade instruments and eat corks and pads and the inside lining of cases, only water in clear bottles is allowed in band room. We also have a water fountain in the band room if you use the correct hand signal (see band sign language below). In order to protect our instruments from damage, no colored drinks, sugared drinks, science suckers, candy, gum, sweets allowed in the band room or band storage rooms.
- Any instrument left in storage areas for any period of time should be completely inside of its cubby and its closed case. Instruments assigned to room 008 must be left on or under a table, and against the assigned wall.
- The band room is a no phone zone. Your phone will be collected and labeled with your name and taken to the Dean by the second time you are found with phone in the no phone zone. It is your responsibility to collect it from the Dean between classes, before or after school, or when the Dean is next available, which may sometimes mean the next school day.
- All students are expected to memorize the band room sign language/hand gestures we learned in class the first 2 weeks in order to keep class disruptions to a minimum. Please refer to the yellow sheets posted on all walls of the band room for our hand signals for restroom, nurse, water fountain, tissue use, etc.. Wait for Mr. C's hand gesture response before you leave your seat. Always wait at the inside of our door window for an escort with a key. Do not leave until the escort opens the door with key. Remember, our exterior room is always in lock-down mode. Your safety is our number one concern!
- Always have a home practice routine of what we are currently working on in class. Be consistent about days of the weeks and time of day that you practice and you will accomplish great things and be successful individually.
Students causing inappropriate interruptions or disruptions to learning in class will receive the following:
- Warning (either on board or verbally), unless it is an offense requiring immediate referral to the Dean or Administration.
- If first warning doesn’t work, student writes parent a note describing disruption/offense. Mr. C must sign the note before the student leaves the class. The note must be returned the following day with a parent signature or #3 below will occur. Or 2. Student is referred to the Dean if second offense is determined to be an offense needing more than merely a communication home.
- Referral to the Dean if disruptive behavior occurs after steps 1 and/or 2 above.
