Hobbs MS Band - Developing outstanding young citizens, while developing outstanding young musicians!
Our Director, Mr. Colόn, receives The Tom Bishop Award at the State Florida Bandmasters Association meeting, January 13th, 2022.
Description taken from FBA website: The intent of this award is to recognize an FBA member who has gone into a band program and turned the program around, making a huge positive difference in a relatively short period of time in the position of band director, including dramatic improvement in MPA ratings. Our FBA zone of directors from Santa Rosa, Okaloosa and Escambia county are able to nominate one member in August to the state committee. Then, three letters of recommendation - the school Principal, a recent concert MPA Adjudicator of the nominee’s band program, and one other FBA member submit letters to the Award Committee Chair by Nov 1st. A committee selects the award recipients by January based on the recommendations and other outside knowledge.

From 2020-21
8th grade Symphonic Band member, Tag Gilbride, presents the 5-year Superior Award to Mr. Colo'n, Band Director. Tag was a member of the 68 piece group last March who was the 5th consecutive superior Hobbs band at its yearly evaluation.
For the first time in the school’s 52 year history, the Hobbs Band has received the Florida Bandmasters Association’s “5-Year Superior Award” for having been rated Superior the last 5 consecutive years, 2016 - 2020, at our yearly Music Performance Assessments! Superior equates the grade of "A" from the 3 stage judges and the sight-reading judge. Due to Covid, the award was mailed to HMS in Feb of 2021 instead of presented at the yearly state FBA meeting. A big thank you for your hard work if you were a part of any of the past 5 Symphonic Bands at Hobbs!
